EV Tax Credits & State Incentives (2026)
The federal EV tax credit expired September 30, 2025. But 14 states still run active EV rebate programs totaling 16 distinct programs, with rebates ranging from $2,000 to $12,000 per vehicle.
Federal Credits — Status
Section 30D new clean vehicle credit ($7,500 max) expired for vehicles acquired after Sept 30, 2025 per Public Law (One Big Beautiful Bill Act). Vehicles acquired on or before that date remain eligible on the buyer's 2025 return. No federal purchase credit exists for post-9/30/2025 acquisitions.
Section 25E used clean vehicle credit ($4,000 max) similarly expired on Sept 30, 2025.
Section 30C alternative fuel refueling property credit (EV charger installation) is set to expire June 30, 2026 for property placed in service after that date.
State EV Rebate Programs
California
CACVRP stopped accepting applications November 8, 2023 after distributing over $1.3B to 594,000+ EV buyers. Successor program: Driving Clean Assistance Program (DCAP) targets low-income buyers only.
