How BestCarRank Works
Our Principle
Every used car buyer deserves free access to safety and reliability data. We take public NHTSA data, synthesize it into clear verdicts, and tell you what to look for — no paywalls for safety information.
Data Sources (All Free)
NHTSA Complaints Database
Consumer complaints filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Includes descriptions, component affected, and crash/fire/injury flags.
NHTSA Recalls
Every vehicle recall issued: affected component, safety risk, and manufacturer remedy.
NHTSA Safety Ratings
5-star crash test ratings from government testing (frontal, side, rollover).
NHTSA vPIC (VIN Decoder)
Decodes any VIN into make, model, year, trim, engine, and manufacturing details.
EPA Fuel Economy Data
Official MPG ratings (city, highway, combined), annual fuel costs, and CO2 emissions from the EPA.
What We Add
- Complaint clustering: We group raw complaints into understandable categories and percentages
- Severity scoring: Fire, crash, and injury reports surface real danger signals
- Reliability verdicts: We compare complaint rates against segment averages
- Year comparison: See which years are good and which to avoid at a glance
- Pre-purchase checklists: Based on known issues, we tell you what to inspect
